Project 01: Manhattan Chinatown Air Quality

Our first project will center on air quality and health in Manhattan Chinatown.

Many people do not realize that Manhattan Chinatown is among the areas within New York City with the worst air quality, having high levels of air pollutants such as fine particle matter and black carbon, leading to long-lasting health impacts.

THE SHOP, replicating the experience of a NYC-themed souvenir store/welcome center, will engage visitors in creative ways to learn about air quality and environmental justice issues confronting Manhattan Chinatown.

Why replicate the experience of a NYC-themed souvenir store to facilitate these provocations?

Souvenir stores are common fixtures in Manhattan Chinatown, and are part of the visual language and economic livelihood of the neighborhood. We wanted to utilize a playful and creative way to present and receive information from visitors.

The SHOP is also part of an effort ISS is leading to reimagine how social service organizations communicate issues facing community members, use innovative ways to learn about community needs, and serve as a resource hub.
